Steroid versus placebo for sudden worsening of lung scarring

Acute Exacerbation of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

This Phase 3 trial studies whether glucocorticoid (steroid) medicine helps people with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) who have a sudden flare-up, compared with an inactive placebo. You may be helped if steroids improve breathing and recovery during these acute episodes, but the study is designed to test that clearly.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You have IPF (or doctors strongly suspect IPF)
  • You recently had an acute flare-up with new breathing worsening within about 1 month, and scans show new lung changes (or—if scan is missing—your team may still call it “suspected flare-up”)
  • Your flare-up is not fully explained by heart failure or fluid overload, and no other clear cause (like a specific infection) has been found
  • If you can become pregnant, you agree to effective birth control during the study
  • You can sign consent (or a legally approved relative can sign for you)
