Who can take part
- You were on a breathing tube (invasive mechanical ventilation) in the ICU for more than 24 hours before it was removed
- After the tube is removed, you develop breathing failure within 7 days
- Your breathing shows ongoing fast breathing or distress for at least 30 minutes, with abnormal blood gas results (low oxygen and/or carbon dioxide/pH changes)
- A relative or you can give consent, or emergency consent rules apply if you can’t speak for yourself
- Your problem is not mainly from a blocked upper airway
