  • You are 18 years or older
  • You had acute respiratory failure and needed a breathing tube (intubation)
  • You have recently had the breathing tube removed (extubated) to see if you can breathe on your own
  • You do not have any condition that prevents using a high-flow nasal cannula, like recent nose surgery, blocked nose passages, or injury
  • You do not have any condition that prevents using a face mask for breathing support, like facial injury, recent face surgery, upper airway blockage, stomach bleeding, or high risk of vomiting
  • You are not under 18 years old
