Pain-free exercise program for people with leg artery disease

This trial tests a new kind of exercise that is meant to be non-ischemic (not reduce blood flow) and pain-free, to see if it helps people with peripheral artery disease (PAD) who get leg pain when walking. You may be eligible if you have PAD confirmed by specific treadmill and blood-pressure measurements and meet the exercise and health safety requirements.

Who can take part

  • Be 40 years or older
  • Have a history of leg pain with walking (claudication) confirmed by questionnaires and a treadmill test
  • Have PAD confirmed on testing: ABI 0.90 or lower at rest OR ankle blood pressure drops by more than 20% right after treadmill testing
  • Not have PAD ruled out by testing (ABI above 0.90 at rest AND less than 20% drop after exercise)
  • Not be missing key measurements or being unable to do the study baseline phase (must complete the baseline run-in within 3 weeks)
  • Avoid certain recent or ongoing treatments: no new claudication medicines (cilostazol or pentoxifylline started within 3 months) and no recent revascularization (procedure to reopen arteries) within 1 month
