Testing features of plaque in symptomatic carotid narrowing

This study looks at the makeup of plaque in the carotid artery (the neck blood vessel to the brain) in people who recently had a stroke caused by that narrowing. Researchers will use MRI and planned surgery to see which plaque components may matter for stroke risk and outcomes.

Who can take part
- Be 18 years or older
- Have had symptoms from carotid artery narrowing with a stroke on the same side (and the stroke is thought to be caused by that narrowing)
- Have an MRI showing an ischemic stroke (a type of stroke from blocked blood flow) on the same side as the carotid narrowing
- Have at least 1 millimeter of non-calcified (not hardened) plaque on the same side as your stroke
- Be planned to have a carotid endarterectomy (surgery to remove plaque from the carotid artery)
- Understand and read English, and be able to sign the consent form
