Who can take part

  • You are 40 years old or older.
  • You have a carotid plaque (a buildup in the neck artery) that is at least 1.5 mm thick on an ultrasound.
  • You are willing to have several types of ultrasound exams (including one with contrast dye).
  • You do not have severe heart or lung problems, an allergy to the contrast dye, or are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You have not had a stent or surgery to remove a plaque from the same side of your neck before.
