This trial tests whether a sedating medicine called dexmedetomidine can reduce the risk of “delirium” (sudden confusion) in the intensive care unit after open-heart surgery. If you’re having certain heart operations, it may help protect your thinking and alertness during recovery.

Who can take part

  • You are scheduled for open-heart surgery that uses a heart-lung machine (cardiopulmonary bypass).
  • You are having one of these surgeries: bypass (CABG), valve repair/replacement, or a combined surgery.
  • Your heart pumping strength (left ventricular ejection fraction) is more than 40%.
  • You do NOT have atrial fibrillation before surgery.
  • You do NOT have certain slow heart rhythm problems (second/third-degree AV block, or resting heart rate ≤ 50).
  • You do NOT have a pacemaker, major kidney/liver problems, or an emergency surgery plan.
