Who can take part

  • You have breathing problems such as fast breathing (respiratory rate 30 or higher)
  • Your oxygen levels are low (PaO2/FiO2 ratio 250 or lower)
  • Your chest scans show infection in more than one lung area (multilobar infiltrates)
  • You are very unwell, such as confusion, fever (over 38°C), or low body temperature (under 36°C)
  • Blood tests show signs of severe illness, like abnormal white blood cells, low platelets, kidney stress, or shock requiring strong fluids/medicines
  • A lung sample test is done (bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and/or suctioned material from the breathing tube)
