Who can take part

  • You have major depressive disorder confirmed by DSM-5 criteria (not another mood diagnosis)
  • Your depression severity is high (MADRS score 24 or higher)
  • You need a new treatment for this current episode
  • You have not already tried the usual antidepressant options for this episode recently (or you had a long enough wash-out)
  • You can safely have an MRI scan (not pregnant/breastfeeding, not severely claustrophobic, and no metal implants that block MRI)
  • You do not have treatment-resistant depression based on at least 2 adequate antidepressant trials that did not help
