Sedation plan for critically ill children on breathing machines

Who can take part

  • Your child is between 1 month and under 18 years old
  • Your child is expected to stay on the ventilator for 24 hours or more
  • The sedation is given through the vein for up to 72 hours to help with mechanical ventilation
  • Your child has no known allergy to isoflurane, sevoflurane, or similar inhaled anesthesia gases
  • Your child does not have a history (in you or them) of malignant hyperthermia, and does not have related muscle/mitochondrial disorders like Duchenne
  • Your child is on a closed breathing circuit with no gas leaks, and does not have suspected high pressure in the brain (high intracranial pressure) or expected to die within 24 hours
