Shock energy study for heart rhythm conversion in atrial fibrillation

You might be eligible if your cardioversion is planned (not an emergency) and your doctors determine you can safely take blood thinners.

Who can take part

  • Be over 18 years old.
  • You are having electrical cardioversion for atrial fibrillation in a planned setting (elective outpatient or non-emergency inpatient).
  • Your doctor says you can take blood thinners (anticoagulation).
  • You’ve been on blood thinners reliably for at least 3 weeks before cardioversion OR your atrial fibrillation started within 48 hours of the cardioversion OR a test (transesophageal echocardiogram) shows no blood clot in the left atrium.
  • Atrial flutter is not the main rhythm being treated, and you must be able to consent to both the cardioversion and study.
