Using electrical shock to restore normal heart rhythm after surgery

Who can take part

  • You have had atrial fibrillation (a fast, irregular heartbeat) that has lasted for 6 months or longer and medication has not helped.
  • Your left atrium (a heart chamber) must be smaller than 55 mm in size, with a volume under 130 ml, and a volume index under 55 ml/m2.
  • You must be willing to sign a consent form.
  • You cannot have other causes for your atrial fibrillation, like thyroid problems or heart inflammation.
  • You cannot have had previous heart procedures like MAZE surgery or ablation, and you cannot need heart bypass or valve surgery.
  • You must not have a blood clot in your left atrium, and you must be able to take blood thinners.
  • Your body mass index (BMI) must be less than 40.
