Who can take part

  • You have chronic kidney disease stage III or IV (or are a kidney transplant recipient, or a matched control without kidney disease)
  • You usually do little exercise (less than 20 minutes, twice per week)
  • Your kidney numbers are stable recently (no faster decline in kidney function in the last 6 months) and your blood bicarbonate is 22–24
  • You have hypertension (high blood pressure) but it is not too high (no readings above 170/100)
  • You must be able to exercise on a stationary bicycle and safely do the MRI scan (no unsafe implants/metal and you can tolerate enclosed spaces)
