Who can take part

  • You are at least 18 years old.
  • You are in the emergency department with low blood pressure or shock, such as low systolic blood pressure or low mean blood pressure plus higher lactate (a blood marker).
  • You received at least 500 mL of IV fluids (including fluids given before reaching the hospital) within 4 hours of arriving in the ER.
  • Your frailty score is usually 4 or less, or an ICU doctor agrees you can be admitted even if the score is 5+.
  • Your treating team does not think your shock is from heart failure, severe allergy, major bleeding, or a nerve problem.
