Who can take part
- You are currently receiving ECMO (the life-support machine)
- You are 18 years or older
- The study team can randomize you within 4 hours after ECMO is started
- You are not a “post-cardiotomy” ECMO patient (ECMO started right after heart surgery)
- You can take either heparin or bivalirudin safely at the time of enrollment (no major active bleeding or known allergy/contraindication)
- You are not expected to be taken off ECMO within the next day after the tubes are placed
