Who can take part

  • You are 18 years old or older
  • You need a veno-venous ECMO machine (a heart-lung bypass for the intensive care unit)
  • You have an arterial catheter (a tube in your artery for blood draws) and can undergo 4 blood draws during the study
  • You are receiving blood thinning medication (unfractionated heparin)
  • You are enrolled in a social security or equivalent insurance program
  • No end-of-life care decisions have been made yet
