Who can take part

  • You are an adult (18 or older) in the intensive care unit (ICU) because your lungs are not getting enough oxygen.
  • You have a fast breathing rate (25 or more breaths per minute) and low oxygen levels in your blood, despite getting at least 10 liters of oxygen each minute.
  • You are awake and can follow simple commands (Glasgow Coma Score 14 or higher).
  • You do not need a breathing tube right now, and you are not under a do-not-intubate order.
  • You do not have a current COVID-19 infection.
  • You are not on high doses of blood pressure medication (norepinephrine more than 0.3 mcg/kg/min).
