Who can take part

  • Not expected to need a breathing tube in the next 2 hours
  • Able to wear the special mask comfortably
  • Has either high carbon dioxide levels with acidosis or recently came off a breathing tube (within 48 hours) and is at high risk of needing it again
  • Or has low oxygen levels despite needing high-flow oxygen, non-invasive breathing help, or more than 6 liters per minute of oxygen with low blood oxygen
  • No confusion or unconsciousness, no stomach tube, no collapsed lung, and no active stomach bleeding
