- Not expected to need a breathing tube in the next 2 hours
- Able to wear the special mask comfortably
- Has either high carbon dioxide levels with acidosis or recently came off a breathing tube (within 48 hours) and is at high risk of needing it again
- Or has low oxygen levels despite needing high-flow oxygen, non-invasive breathing help, or more than 6 liters per minute of oxygen with low blood oxygen
- No confusion or unconsciousness, no stomach tube, no collapsed lung, and no active stomach bleeding
