Who can take part
- You have sudden breathing trouble (acute respiratory failure).
- Your carbon dioxide level is high (PaCO2 of 45 mmHg or more) and your blood pH is low (less than 7.35).
- You must be willing to sign a consent form.
- You should not have very slow breathing, need for immediate intubation, very low blood pressure, high lactic acid, recent head surgery, or any condition that prevents a face mask from fitting.
- You must not have conditions that interfere with special monitoring devices (esophageal balloon or EIT belt).
