Sealing damaged lung parts in severe emphysema

Who can take part

  • You are between 40 and 80 years old.
  • You have completed a pulmonary rehab program in the past year and have not smoked for at least 8 weeks.
  • You have severe emphysema that is unevenly spread (heterogeneous) and one lung lobe is very damaged (at least 50% destruction).
  • You have a gap in the fissure (the natural division between lung lobes) that is 80% or more complete, and that gap is limited to three segments within the target lobe.
  • You can walk between 150 and 450 meters in 6 minutes, and you have significant shortness of breath (mMRC score of 2 or more).
  • Your lung function tests show severe obstruction (FEV1 between 15% and 45% of predicted, FEV1/FVC less than 0.7) and your lungs are overinflated (TLC at least 100% predicted, RV at least 175% predicted).
