Who can take part

  • You are 19 years old or older, with no upper age limit.
  • You have cardiogenic shock (your heart isn't pumping enough blood) and need care in an intensive care unit (ICU).
  • You can take oral medication (pills by mouth).
  • You are willing and able to give written informed consent, or have someone who can decide for you.
  • You do not already have a mechanical heart pump or device for support.
  • You have not had a recent heart attack (acute coronary syndrome) and do not have severe valve disease needing urgent surgery.
  • You are not allergic to beta-blockers like carvedilol, and you have no asthma or bronchospasm history.
  • You do not have a very slow heart rate, certain heart block problems, or sick sinus syndrome.
  • You are not pregnant, within 30 days after childbirth, or breastfeeding.
