Who can take part
- You must be over 40 years old.
- You have COPD and are currently having a severe flare-up (exacerbation) that causes high carbon dioxide levels in your blood (PaCO2 >45 mmHg) and acidic blood (pH 7.20–7.35).
- You must not have asthma (chronic asthma is a different condition).
- You are not already using a home breathing machine like a CPAP or BiPAP.
- You do not have a tracheostomy or other serious health problems that would interfere with the trial.
