High-flow nasal oxygen for COPD flare-ups

This study tests whether high-flow nasal oxygen (a gentle breathing support through the nose) can help people with a severe COPD flare-up. If you have high carbon dioxide and slightly acidic blood, this treatment might improve your breathing and avoid the need for a breathing tube.

Who can take part

  • You must be over 40 years old.
  • You have COPD and are currently having a severe flare-up (exacerbation) that causes high carbon dioxide levels in your blood (PaCO2 >45 mmHg) and acidic blood (pH 7.20–7.35).
  • You must not have asthma (chronic asthma is a different condition).
  • You are not already using a home breathing machine like a CPAP or BiPAP.
  • You do not have a tracheostomy or other serious health problems that would interfere with the trial.
