Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older and willing to sign a consent form.
  • You have COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).
  • Two to four weeks after a COPD flare-up that needed breathing support (non-invasive ventilation), your blood carbon dioxide level is still above 53 mmHg.
  • Your blood pH is above 7.35 (your body is not too acidic).
  • You have low oxygen levels in your blood (PaO2 below 55 mmHg, or below 60 mmHg if you also have certain other conditions).
  • You do not have severe sleep apnea, a body mass index (BMI) over 30, or other diseases that affect breathing, and you have not used a home breathing machine before.
