This trial tests whether metformin, a common diabetes medicine, can prevent arthritis after an ACL injury. If you are planning to have ACL surgery soon, you may be able to join.

Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 45 years old (if you are 18–24, you must have knee pain scores below 80).
  • You tore your ACL within the last 6 months.
  • You plan to get ACL reconstruction surgery within 12 months of your injury.
  • You are not currently taking metformin or topiramate, and you do not have diabetes or kidney problems.
  • You do not have inflammatory arthritis, a previous ACL tear on the same knee, or a recent ACL tear on the other knee.
  • You are not pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to get pregnant in the next year.
