Surgery for Thyroid Cancer With or Without Special Light to Protect Calcium Glands

This study tests whether using a special light (called autofluorescence) during thyroid cancer surgery helps lower the risk of a common side effect—hypoparathyroidism, which can cause low calcium levels. You may be able to join if you are scheduled for a complete thyroid removal and have normal calcium before surgery.

Who can take part

  • You must be 18 years or older.
  • You have a diagnosis or suspicion of thyroid cancer.
  • You are scheduled for a total thyroidectomy (removing the entire thyroid) or a completion thyroidectomy (removing any leftover thyroid tissue).
  • Your calcium levels are normal before surgery.
  • You are not having a separate surgery on your parathyroid glands at the same time.
  • You are not taking active vitamin D medications, and your kidney function is not severely reduced (eGFR at least 30).
