Ultrasound guidance for brain drain placement in hydrocephalus

This study tests whether using ultrasound (a type of imaging) to guide the placement of a brain drain (ventricular catheter) is safe and effective for patients with newly diagnosed hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain). If you're already scheduled for the procedure, you may be able to join.

Who can take part

  • Your doctor has decided you need a catheter placed in your brain to drain extra fluid.
  • You are at least 18 years old.
  • You are currently in the Neurological ICU.
  • You have been newly diagnosed with hydrocephalus (fluid buildup in the brain).
  • You had a CT scan within the last day showing more brain fluid than blood in the area where the catheter will go.
  • Your blood clotting tests (platelets and coagulation) are normal, and you don't have an active infection or are not on antibiotics.
