Diabetes eye disease natural progression study

Biomarkers of Diabetic Retinopathy

This study follows people with type 2 diabetes to understand how diabetic retinopathy (an eye disease caused by diabetes) changes over time without treatment. It may help if you have no other eye issues causing new blood vessels and are not planning for certain eye procedures.

Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 75 years old and have type 2 diabetes.
  • You can attend clinic visits and sign a consent form.
  • You have no other eye diseases that cause new blood vessel growth in the retina.
  • You have no severe clouding in your eye (like cataracts) that would blur photos of your retina.
  • You have not had laser treatment in your eye, or do not need it in the next six months.
  • You have not had any injections into your eye (for treatment), and do not expect any in the next six months.
  • You have no swelling in the center of your retina from diabetes (macular edema) at specific thickness measures.
  • Your diabetic retinopathy is at a mild or moderate stage, not severe (non-proliferative).
  • You have not had any eye surgery.
  • You do not have kidney failure.
  • You have not received any anti-VEGF (eye growth blocker) medicines through your veins in the last month.
  • You do not live far away or have a detached retina that makes follow-up visits hard.
  • You have no known allergies to study-related materials.
