This trial tests whether cooling the body down (hypothermia) combined with a clot removal procedure (thrombectomy) helps people recover better from a large-artery stroke. You may be eligible if you have a moderate-to-severe stroke and can be treated within 24 hours of when you were last seen well.

Who can take part

  • You must have had a stroke caused by a blockage in a large artery in your brain (M1, M2, internal carotid, or tandem blockage).
  • Your stroke symptoms must be moderate to severe (NIH Stroke Scale score higher than 5).
  • You need to start treatment within 6 hours of when you were last seen normal, or within 6 to 24 hours if special imaging shows you have salvageable brain tissue.
  • You must not have any nasal problem that prevents placing a cooling tube through your nose.
  • You must not have a serious bleeding disorder (high INR, high PTT, or low platelets).
