This study tests if deep brain stimulation (a small device implanted in the brain) can improve speech and arm movement after a stroke that affected the deeper parts of the brain. It is designed for people who have trouble speaking clearly (dysarthria) from their stroke.

Who can take part

  • You had a stroke (clot or bleed) more than 6 months ago that caused trouble speaking (dysarthria).
  • You are between 18 and 75 years old and speak English.
  • Your speech is fairly hard to understand (scoring 80% or less on several speech tests).
  • You are not taking blood thinners and do not have other serious medical conditions (like cancer, severe heart/lung disease, or another neurological problem).
  • You are not pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, and you can undergo an MRI.
