Who can take part

  • You have been diagnosed with primary MDS that is very low, low, or intermediate risk (not high risk).
  • Your MDS is not caused by a deletion in chromosome 5 (non-5q).
  • Your average hemoglobin level (without a blood transfusion) is between 6.0 and 10.0 g/dL, measured at least a week apart.
  • You have either not needed any red blood cell transfusions in the last 16 weeks, or you have had only a few (1 to 7 units) in that time.
  • Your EPO (a hormone that tells your body to make red blood cells) level is 500 mU/mL or lower.
  • Your platelet count is at least 30,000 and your neutrophil count is at least 800, and your liver and kidney function are within safe limits.
