This study tests a machine that removes carbon dioxide from your blood (called extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal or ECCO2R) to help protect your lungs from further damage while on a breathing machine. It may be an option if you have severe ARDS and your breathing machine settings are very high.

Who can take part
- You are 18 years or older and have been diagnosed with ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome)
- Your breathing machine shows high pressure readings (driving pressure above 14 or plateau above 25)
- Your breathing rate is more than 20 breaths per minute
- Your blood gas test shows low pH (below 7.25) and high carbon dioxide (above 45)
- Your ARDS has not lasted longer than 72 hours
- You do not have conditions like severe heart rhythm problems, a need for blood thinners that are risky, or advanced lung scarring
