Carbon dioxide removal plus breathing support for severe COPD

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You have a confirmed diagnosis of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).
  • You are having a sudden worsening of your COPD symptoms (increased shortness of breath, cough, or phlegm).
  • Your blood is too acidic (pH < 7.30) and carbon dioxide is too high (PaCO2 > 50 mmHg), requiring noninvasive ventilation.
  • You are not eligible for endotracheal intubation (breathing tube), either by medical decision or your own choice.
  • Even after 4 hours of noninvasive ventilation, your blood is still too acidic (pH < 7.30) and carbon dioxide remains high (PaCO2 > 45 mmHg).
