Who can take part

  • Your child must be in good health (classified as ASA 1 or 2).
  • Your child must be between 5 and 10 years old.
  • The surgery must be non-emergency and scheduled ahead of time.
  • Your child must be getting anesthesia through a breathing mask (inhalational induction).
  • Your child must speak English and have no hearing problems.
  • Your child cannot have had anesthesia through a mask before, and must not have behavioral conditions like autism or oppositional defiant disorder.
  • Your child can only receive midazolam (a calming medicine) before the procedure—no other premedication.
