Who can take part

  • You must be 18 years or older.
  • You must have moderate to profound hearing loss in both ears that developed after you learned to speak, and be scheduled for a cochlear implant in one ear.
  • Your hearing test must show certain levels: low tones (125-500 Hz) no worse than 70 decibels, and high tones (2000-8000 Hz) at least 70 decibels or worse.
  • Your ear receiving the implant must have normal middle ear function (Type A tympanogram).
  • You must not have used certain strong medications (like chemotherapy or specific antibiotics) within the past 60 days.
  • You must not be pregnant, breastfeeding, or have significant liver problems.
