Who can take part

  • You are scheduled for open-heart surgery that uses a heart-lung machine (cardiopulmonary bypass) between December 15, 2023, and December 15, 2024.
  • You agree to take part in the study and sign a consent form.
  • You have not had any previous open-heart surgeries using a heart-lung machine.
  • You have never had lung surgery or been diagnosed with lung cancer.
  • You do not have severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (stage 3) or advanced chronic kidney disease (stage 4 or 5).
  • Your risk profile, as assessed by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, is not low.
