Who can take part

  • Between 18 and 65 years old
  • Scheduled for planned major surgery (not emergency) that is not on the heart or lungs
  • Surgery will last at least 3 hours under general anesthesia (you'll be fully asleep)
  • No serious lung disease like severe COPD or pulmonary fibrosis
  • No previous lung surgery or current lung infection
  • Not expected to need a breathing machine or intensive care after surgery
