Who can take part

  • You are 18 years old or older.
  • You have been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for more than 24 hours.
  • Your care team has decided you are ready to try breathing on your own (a 'spontaneous breathing trial' or SBT).
  • Your blood pressure and heart rate are stable (no need for strong medications to keep them normal).
  • You have a special tube (esophageal catheter) in place to measure breathing effort.
