Breathing Machine Patterns to Predict Recovery in Severe Lung Failure

This study looks at how the breathing machine settings and lung function can help predict recovery in people with severe ARDS. You may be able to join if you are on a ventilator for sudden lung failure and have severe ARDS, as long as you don't have certain other health issues.

Who can take part

  • You are on a breathing machine because of sudden lung failure.
  • You have been diagnosed with severe ARDS (a lung injury that makes it hard to get oxygen) with a very low oxygen level in your blood.
  • You are not on a strong blood pressure medication like norepinephrine at a high dose.
  • You do not have severe COPD or pulmonary fibrosis that already limits your breathing.
  • You do not have a chest tube, a heart-lung bypass machine (ECMO), or a tube in your neck (tracheostomy).
