Who can take part

  • You must be 18 years or older.
  • You have a serious lung injury called moderate to severe ARDS.
  • You are on a breathing machine and given medicine to keep you asleep and temporarily paralyzed.
  • You must be able to give consent (or have a family member give it for you).
  • You cannot be pregnant.
  • You cannot have a pacemaker, certain heart devices, or need high doses of heart medicines or IV fluids.
