Who can take part

  • You have a severe lung infection or injury called ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome).
  • You are on a special heart-lung bypass machine (VV-ECMO) to help your lungs.
  • You have not been on a breathing machine with very high pressure or oxygen for more than 7 days.
  • You do not have any condition that prevents you from taking blood thinners (heparin).
  • You have no permanent brain injury that cannot be reversed.
  • You do not have severe long-term lung disease that would shorten your life to less than 6 months.
