This study compares two ways of feeding babies with brain injury from lack of oxygen at birth (hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy). One group gets small, steady feedings (continuous) and the other gets larger amounts every few hours (bolus). The goal is to see which is better for their recovery.

Who can take part

  • Your baby must have signs of brain injury after a lack of oxygen at birth, like seizures or an abnormal exam.
  • Blood tests right after birth should show a low pH (7.15 or less) or high base deficit (more than -10).
  • Your baby should be getting cooling treatment (therapeutic hypothermia) for the brain injury.
  • Your baby cannot have major birth defects or inherited metabolic disorders.
  • Your baby cannot have started any feeding before being enrolled in the trial.
