Who can take part

  • You have had emergency surgery on your bowels (for problems like a hole, blockage, or infection).
  • You are in the intensive care unit (ICU) and will need medicine to keep you calm and help you breathe with a ventilator.
  • You have an infection in your belly that affects your organs.
  • You are not allergic to ketamine or dexmedetomidine.
  • You are not pregnant, and do not have severe heart, liver, or kidney failure.
  • You have not received muscle relaxant drugs in your first 48 hours in the ICU.
