Who can take part

  • You have had your entire thyroid gland removed (total thyroidectomy) in the past.
  • You have low calcium symptoms (like numbness or tingling) that require high doses of calcium (over 2000 mg daily) and vitamin D (over 2 mcg calcitriol daily), or you need IV calcium occasionally.
  • Blood tests show you have low parathyroid hormone levels (hypoparathyroidism).
  • You have been treated with medications for at least 1 year after thyroidectomy, but still have symptoms and abnormal blood tests.
  • You are healthy enough for an organ transplant, with no active infections, no cancer that would be a problem, and no reasons you cannot take anti-rejection medicines or have surgery.
