Who can take part

  • You have been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for at least 2 days straight.
  • Your diaphragm muscle is not working well (measured by a breathing strength test and ultrasound).
  • You do not have heart problems, nerve or muscle disease, or a major brain injury that would make the treatments unsafe.
  • You are not sedated and your body is stable enough to try breathing on your own.
