This study looks at a specific way to control a breathing machine (ventilator) to help prevent weakness of the diaphragm, the main breathing muscle, in newly intubated adults. You might be considered if you are newly on a ventilator for less than 36 hours and certain other conditions are not present.

Who can take part

  • Be older than 18 years
  • You started being on a breathing machine (intubation/mechanical ventilation) less than 36 hours ago
  • You are not pregnant
  • You do not have a history of diaphragm paralysis or a nerve/muscle problem that affects breathing
  • You do not have a tracheostomy or a high neck (cervical spine) injury
  • You are not expected to come off the ventilator within 24 hours
