You might be considered if you are newly on a ventilator for less than 36 hours and certain other conditions are not present.

Who can take part
- Be older than 18 years
- You started being on a breathing machine (intubation/mechanical ventilation) less than 36 hours ago
- You are not pregnant
- You do not have a history of diaphragm paralysis or a nerve/muscle problem that affects breathing
- You do not have a tracheostomy or a high neck (cervical spine) injury
- You are not expected to come off the ventilator within 24 hours
