Who can take part

  • You have been diagnosed with an acute type A aortic dissection (a tear in the main artery from the heart) within the last 2 weeks.
  • You have new signs that this tear is blocking blood flow to organs, such as chest pain, confusion, belly pain, or abnormal lab tests.
  • You are between 18 and 80 years old.
  • You do not have life-threatening complications like heart sac compression (cardiac tamponade) or a ruptured aorta when you arrive at the hospital.
  • You have not had a cardiac arrest requiring ongoing CPR, and you do not have irreversible multiple organ failure.
