Who can take part

  • You are an adult in the intensive care unit with ARDS (a serious lung condition).
  • You are currently on a breathing machine through a tube in your windpipe.
  • You have had the breathing tube in place for less than 48 hours.
  • You do not have any nerve or muscle diseases like ALS or a paralyzed phrenic nerve.
  • You do not have any implanted medical devices like a pacemaker, defibrillator, or medication pump.
