Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 75 years old and your BMI is under 30.
  • You have a cervical spinal cord injury between levels C1 and C5 that happened at least 2 weeks ago.
  • Your breathing is weak enough that you need a ventilator or have low oxygen or high carbon dioxide levels.
  • You have some muscle strength to inhale (MIP greater than -15 cmH₂O).
  • You cannot go without a ventilator for 48 hours because of your spinal cord injury.
  • You don't have an active infection, severe heart or lung problems, or another implanted device.
