- You are 18 or older
- You have new breathing problems that started within the last 2 weeks
- You are currently on a ventilator in the ICU
- Your blood oxygen levels are low despite breathing support
- You are expected to need the ventilator for at least 2 more days
- You do not have certain other lung or nerve conditions
