Who can take part

  • You are a child under 18 years old
  • You have a type of heart problem present at birth (congenital heart disease)
  • You are scheduled for heart surgery with general anesthesia
  • The surgery must include a planned arterial line (a thin tube placed in an artery)
  • Your surgery is not an emergency
  • You do not have severe anemia (low red blood cells; hemoglobin less than 8.0 g/dL)
